The IDEF Family of Languages

چکیده

The purpose of this article is to serve as a clear introduction to the modeling languages of the three most widely used IDEF methods: IDEF0, IDEF1X, and IDEF3. Each language is presented in turn, beginning with a discussion of the underlying “ontology” the language purports to describe, followed by presentations of the syntax of the language — particularly the notion of a model for the language — and the semantical rules that determine how models are to be interpreted. The level of detail should be sufficient to enable the reader both to understand the intended areas of application of the languages and to read and construct simple models of each of the three types.

UML vs. IDEF: An Ontology-Oriented Comparative Study in View of Business Modelling

The UML and IDEF sets of languages characterize typical modelling approaches of software engineering and computer integrated manufacturing, respectively. This paper presents a comparative analysis of these languages based on their ontologies and in view of their use in business modelling. A brief introduction to UML and IDEF is followed by a high-level comparison taking into account underlying ...

The complementary use of IDEF and UML modelling approaches

The IDEF and Unified Modelling Language (UML) modelling approaches have become popular in industrial and academic circles. IDEF comprises a suite of graphical modelling techniques designed to formally specify and communicate important aspects of enterprise engineering projects, whereas UML is a modelling language that can be used to generate computerexecutable models that encode key aspects of ...

Are Process Modeling Languages Overly Complex?

Modern business process modeling languages such as BPMN or EPC provide users with more constructs to represent real world situations than their predecessors such as IDEF or Petri Nets. But this apparent increase in expressiveness is accompanied by an increase in language complexity. In practice many organizations choose to only use a subset of the available modeling constructs. Using a wellesta...

An Integrative Approach to Support Multi-perspective Business Process Modeling

Business process modeling (BPM) has become a dominating approach for organizations to understand, plan and optimize their business processes. BPM has also become an important part in service systems development because it helps to identify service activities embedded in business processes. Several modeling languages have been developed to support BPM, including IDEF, BPMN and EPC. Yet, our rese...
